The engine contains thousands of small explosions every minute while running; this heat must be contained with lubrication provided by motor oil as well as the engine cooling system that absorbs and removes heat at the radiator. At the heart of the engine cooling system is the coolant fluid continuously circulated via the water pump as it travels through engine passages collecting heat and carrying it to the radiator where it is cooled. Given the importance of this function to engine operation and longevity, coolant fluid requires routine inspections and exchange service when it has lost integrity.

Warning Signs of Defective Coolant

If you detect any of the telltale warning signs of bad coolant, it is a wise decision to get a prompt inspection and corrective maintenance as soon as possible:

• Repeated need to top off fluid
• Observed coolant leak
• Engine overheating
• Steam exiting from under the hood
• White exhaust smoke

Dangers of Coolant Fluid/Antifreeze That Has Lost Integrity

When coolant fluid has leaked from a worn component, is due for scheduled exchange service at the recommended miles, or becomes contaminated, it needs to be changed to protect the engine cooling system's performance. If the engine is not cooled properly, the increased heat will invite rapid wear, internal component damages, and ultimately an overheated engine immobilizing your Toyota.
